They realize that the aliens are trying to extract the planet’s core and use it to power their machines. The aliens arrive with inside a massive mothership that almost covers a third of the Earth. Meanwhile, the aliens that they encountered before finally return, and this time, they have weapons that are bigger and more powerful than before. Later they discover that it’s a vessel from another race, sent to help them escape to safety. Levinson, who has been investigating a large alien space leftover from the 1996 encounter, eagerly goes, and they discover a strange spherical ship amongst the wreckage on the moon. Jake Morrison, against the advice of his superiors, steals a “space tug” and goes down to Earth to help Levinson. However, David Levinson, who suspects this vessel may not have been of hostile intent, decides that they need to investigate, but the president who’s more concerned with the 20th anniversary of their Independence Day wants him to stay behind. However, things take a surprising turn when a mysterious space ship arrives at the moon, and fearing the worst, the president Elizabeth Lanford orders for it to be shot down. This new space defense initiative, headed by David Levinson, has resulted in weapons being deployed in orbit around Earth and on the moon. During this time, humanity has been united in a way never before thought possible, and they’ve begun adapting leftover alien technology for use in another possible alien attack.
The story takes place twenty years after the first movie. Emmerich returns as the director and Devlin serves as the producer. Woods, Nicolas Wright and James Vanderbilt.

The screenplay for this new movie was written by Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich, James A.
This movie was dedicated to the memory of Robert Loggia (General Grey) who died shortly after its completion. Finally, he felt they’d reached that point as they neared the 20th anniversary of the first film and began production. Yet, even after its great success, Emmerich was hesitant to make another, deciding to focus developing a good story before undertaking a new film. When Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich made Independence Day back in 1996, they left the possibility open for a sequel. Independence Day Resurgence Promotional Poster
